Get the Look - "Mixing it Like Solange"

In recent years, Solange Knowles has definitely made a name for herself in the fashion industry.  Her undeniable love for fashion has shown itself evident time and time again.   Her fun, bold, vintage-inspired personal style will surely keep her turning heads for years to come.  She’s not only stunning, but her style and personality are very much relatable.

Solange is especially known for her unique take on the art of “mixing prints.”  Whether attending various social events, runway shows, or red carpet extravaganzas, Solange has been known to display her love for “mixing prints/patterns.”  Solange’s effortless take on color, pattern, and prints have easily earned her the title of being a modern-day style icon.

Mixing prints is such a fun way to pair things that may have been in your closet for years, and create brand new ensembles!  You’ll be given a few tips to assist you in mixing patterns, along with three looks that will hopefully inspire you to create looks of your own.

Tip #1:  Mix prints/patterns that are from the same color family.  This makes “mixing prints” visually appealing, but allows for it to be a little easier on the eyes.  For example; mix a red print with a burgundy or maroon print.

Tip #2:  Think of some patterns/textures as if they were solids.  Some patterns can come across as solids, due to the size of the patterns/textures.  For example; small polka dots, thin stripes, and small checks can all be treated as solid colors.

Tip #3:  Look for patterns that complement one another.  Some patterns look really great together.  For example; stripes and floral, and leopard and polka dot or stripes look really good when paired with one another.

Tip#4:  Avoid being too “matchy-matchy.”  Try to avoid dressing in one particular pattern from head-to-toe.  The exception would be if you chose to pair two of the same patterns together that were different in color.

Tip #5:  Space patterns out.  It is okay to space the patterns you are wearing out.  For example, it would be acceptable to wear a solid shirt with patterned bottoms and a patterned scarf or shoes.  Your outfit will still pop!

Tip #6:  Include neutrals in your outfit.  Pairing your printed outfit with nice, neutral stockings, shoes, and/or accessories help to seal your entire look.

Tip #7:  Combine patterns of different densities/sizes.  Choosing to pair a really dense print with a really sparse print, or pairing a really small print with a much larger print is a really great idea.  The difference in the densities/sizes of the prints will help to balance out the final look.  One of the prints will act as the forerunner, while the other print will work the background.

Tip #8:  Use accessories wisely.  Again, your printed outfit should be the focal point of your entire ensemble.  Your accessories should accent the outfit, and not overpower it.  A nice, subtle printed bag or solid belt may be just the thing that really refines your entire look!

Below are 3 looks that I’ve created to inspire you in your mixing your own prints/patterns.  Mixing prints can be intimidating at first, but you will eventually get the hang of it.  Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Get the Look - "Brunch"

Shirt $33 houseofraser.co.uk | Shorts $29 chicnova.com | Bag $60 dsw.com | Shoes $17 theiconic.com.au | Hat $40 warehouse.co.uk | Sunglasses $10 freyrs.com | Earrings $20 etsy.com

Brunch:  This look is a fun alternative to your typical brunch attire.  This paint-splattered top and plaid shorts combo work beautifully together.  The accessories intentionally chosen to be kept solid to tone some of the business of the outfit down.   The splatter pattern on the top is large, while the plaid pattern on the shorts is much smaller.  Together, they work together to create a tasteful balance for a tasty brunch!

Get the Look - "Office"

Skirt $18 newlook.com | Top $40 warehouse.co.uk | Bag $18 colettehayman.com.au | Shoes $34 amazon.com | Watch $61 amazon.com | Earrings $20 amazon.com | Glasses $10 freyrs.com

Office:  You no longer have to dread getting dressed for work in the morning.  Yes, the art of “mixing prints” can even be taken to the “roundtable.”  The floral-patterned top works well alongside the simplistic, graphic-patterned skirt.  It’s a very chic, work-place appropriate look.

Get the Look - "Girl's Night Out"

Skirt $56 fatface.com | Shirt $83 shoplesnouvelles.com | Bag $21 newlook.com | Shoes $57 asos.com | Earrings $26 6pm.com

Girl’s Night Out:  This look would be perfect for a couple of drinks out on the town with your girlfriends.  The top and bottom look like they belong together, right?  This is because they belong in the same color family.  Each of the elements bring its own geometric element to the mix.  The intersecting triangles in the top are brought to the forefront, while the parallel-lined skirt act as its background piece.

Happy Mixing!
